MY APPROACH

01. OBSERVE

Fieldwork is often the first step in understanding a species. Through observation, field sketches and visual notes, I study behaviour, movement and character, details that help bring life and authenticity to the final artwork.

02. UNDERSTAND

Besides fieldwork a visit to a wildlife sanctuary or the archives of a natural history museum can help to study details and compare different specimens. Any research or reference material that can be helpful is collected.

03. DESIGN & PAINT

Composition ideas often come to me when in the field. For scientific purposes you need to filter, distill and neutralise the species for clear identification. For an artwork light and habitat studies from the field will help turning the painting in a convincing wildlife scene.

This is the same process I teach.

Not a fixed formula, but a way of learning to observe, understand and portray wildlife with greater confidence.
