Looking at details of a bird isn’t always easy in the field or even at a zoo. The archives of a natural history museum can help, but the colour of the paws and bills are no longer accurate and you can’t open the wings of prepared study skins. I always have mixed feelings when finding a fresh roadkill. It’s very sad to see another traffic/window victim, especially when it’s a rare species, but on the other hand it’s a chance to study a species in detail and learn. All I can try is to capture their beauty and make it eternal in these measured drawings.  This bird was found dead in the field by a friend.
