Tawny Owl Chick | Joris De Raedt
top of page

Tawny owls are usually hard to see. You can often hear their typical call that appears to come out of a spooky movie scene, but during the day they hide in hollow trees of dense canopies. The best time of year to see them is in spring when the chicks have just left the nest. At this stage they are still unable to fly and climb around in the trees surrounding the nest. The parents keep a watchful eye out from a more sheltered spot, but often visible. This watercolor was made in the garden of friends that were lucky to have an inhabited nest box.
